Amelia opened the front door with trepidation. Michael was home. He had texted earlier to say he’d arrive home before her and would make dinner.

Bruno padded into the hallway to greet her. Already he was a part of the family. She couldn’t remember what life was like before he arrived and yet he had only been there a couple of days. But he’d settled in so well. He’d had no accidents like a puppy would have and he was calm and well-mannered for a dog. She found she actually quite liked him. He lifted his wet nose to her palm and she rubbed his head through his cone. His tail showed his delight at her affection.

The nerves she entered with were smudged by the warmth of Bruno and Amelia allowed herself a minute to wallow in his welcome home.

‘Ah, there you are. I wondered what happened to you.’ Michael appeared through the kitchen doorway. ‘Bruno, leave.’

‘No. He’s fine,’ she said without straightening. It was easier to fuss the dog than it was to walk into the kitchen and face her husband. When did their marriage get like this?

‘Sorry, I just thought…’ He trailed off.

‘He’s okay. I’m getting used to him.’ She patted the dog on the head and straightened. Bruno nudged at her thigh.

‘Bruno,’ Michael warned.

Amelia looked at him. Rubbed the dog’s head again.

‘Steaks tonight, with a salad. Is that okay?’ Michael asked, looking a little confused.

‘Sounds fine.’ She followed him back into the kitchen. The radio was on. Amelia checked her watch. The news would be on in five minutes. Five minutes for her to gather her strength.

‘Are you going to shower before we eat?’ Michael was at the sink washing the salad.

Amelia walked to the cupboard and selected a wine glass. ‘I will in a few minutes. I’m going to have a drink first.’ She went to the fridge and filled her glass. Dutch courage.

Michael furrowed his brows at her.

‘Sorry, did you want one?’ she asked, having completely forgotten to ask him.

He shook his head. ‘No. It’s fine, thanks. It’s just you don’t normally drink as soon as you get in.’

‘What’s “normal”?’ she asked.

Michael looked uncomfortable.

‘I’m just saying, we can’t stick to routine all the time. We have to fling off the shackles some days. Don’t you think?’

‘I… I… suppose. It depends on what those shackles are.’

‘What shackles would you like to fling off?’ She took a slug of her wine. It was too late; she had jumped into the conversation without even realising she was going to. She didn’t even know what conversation she was jumping into. But something had started. There was no evidence and she didn’t work without evidence. This was the man she loved. She wasn’t about to act on something she was only suspicious about, but she did have to talk to him. She needed to know how bad things were.

Michael turned the tap off and kept his back to her. Dried off the salad with kitchen towel.

‘Michael?’ she pushed.

‘I don’t need to fling anything off.
